1980 Rolex Oysterquartz Ref 17000

The Rolex Oysterquartz was a quartz watch - yes - made by Rolex - and yes - its awfully pretty.
This one here is a superb never polished all original gently worn Oysterquartz 17000 from 1980.

2nd dial version slightly aged in a beautiful creamy warm white color with superlative chronometer print.
Lume dots and hands match perfectly. 1 o´clock dot missing. Case with little signs of wear, small scratch between 1 and 2 o´clock postion. Bracelet and clasp in good condition with 13 links. Some signs of wear.

High grade Rolex 5035 Quartz manufactured caliber with hack second feature. The 5035 is based
on the mechanical Rolex 3035 caliber. Both calibers are based on same mechanics but different engines. Balance wheel and main spring exchanged against Electronics and pulse motor.

Rolex created it at the beginning of the quartz crisis with the best quartz movement ever developed - the rolex manufactured caliber 5335, produced from 1977 - 2001.

Even though the watch was available for nearly 30 years in many versions, it's popularity was extremely low resulting in a mere 25 000 Oysterquartz watches ever being produced. This makes the Oysterquartz one of the rarest Rolex watches available for sale.

The Ref 17000 is in my eyes the nicest, purest and most desirable version of the Oysterquartz series. A milestone in watch history.

John Huston wore his Oysterquartz 17000 on a photograph taken in the 1980s which was used for the apple „think different“ campaign in 1997.
